Complex PTSD

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is a mental health condition that develops from prolonged or repeated trauma, particularly in situations where escape isn’t possible, such as childhood abuse or ongoing domestic violence. It involves classic PTSD symptoms (like re-experiencing trauma) alongside additional difficulties in regulating emotions, maintaining healthy relationships, and a damaged sense of self. Causes often include long-term abuse, neglect, or captivity, leading to a range of symptoms including feelings of worthlessness, intense mood swings, self-harm, and an inability to trust.

Causes of Complex PTSD

  • Prolonged or Repeated Trauma:

Unlike PTSD, which can result from a single traumatic event, C-PTSD arises from continuous, interpersonal trauma.

  • Examples:

Childhood abuse (physical, emotional, or sexual), long-term domestic or sexual violence, human trafficking, captivity, and war are common causes.

  • Lack of Control:

Often, the individual experiences a profound lack of control over the traumatic situation, which contributes to the development of C-PTSD.

Symptoms of Complex PTSD

C-PTSD affects multiple areas of life, going beyond typical PTSD symptoms to include:

  • Emotional Dysregulation:

Intense emotions, difficulty controlling feelings, mood swings, or engaging in self-harm.

  • Negative Self-Perception:

Feelings of worthlessness, guilt, shame, hopelessness, or a sense that one is permanently damaged.

  • Interpersonal Difficulties:

Trouble with trust, difficulty forming or maintaining close relationships, and a feeling of being isolated or disconnected from others.

  • Dissociation:

Experiencing depersonalization (feeling detached from oneself) or derealization (feeling the world is unreal or dreamlike).

  • Physical Symptoms:

Headaches, dizziness, stomach aches, and other physical complaints.

How it Differs from PTSD

  • Duration and Nature of Trauma:

PTSD is often triggered by a single event, while C-PTSD is associated with prolonged, complex trauma.
